On Thursday, February 1st, Imbolc, also known as “Saint Brigid’s Day” takes place this year. Imbolc is traditionally an Irish and Scottish Gaelic holiday and festival. This special day symbolizes the beginning of spring and is the halfway mark between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. It is a traditional Gaelic Pagan holiday that is hundreds of years old but has also been adapted into Christianity as the feast day of Saint Brigid. Brigid is originally the goddess of fertility, spring and life.  It is perfect timing for the Wolf Moon and Imbolc to take place exactly a week apart this year. Both symbolize a fresh start to not only a new year but a new season. Spring has always been a beacon of hope all throughout time. The sun stays with us longer during the day and the nights become shorter. The snow is no longer sticking and the chance of new life is able to sprout. Now is the time to place the seeds of what we would like to see grow this year. And by seeds, yes we mean both metaphorically and physically. Like we mentioned before, it is time to begin to set the foundations for this year of change so we are able to reap the rewards. It is time for a new and healthier cycle to emerge; a new year, a new moon cycle and a new season! The Universe is telling us so!  Grounding and De-Stressing in the Winter It can be hard for us to feel grounded and connected to nature when it's winter; snow covers the ground, the wind nips at our cheeks and we feel sleepy at 5PM when the sun goes down. So how can we ground ourselves in the bitter cold of winter? We love to create our own incense blends to begin meditating, for this blend we choose our favourite de-stressing and calming herbs; rose, lemon balm, lavender and lemongrass. Something about the light floral and citrus scent reminds us of that first day of spring; when the sun shines brighter, the wind feels warmer and we suddenly have a boost of energy because of the weather. Next we light a candle with the intention of grounding. We chose a red candle to align with our root chakra, which sets the foundation of the rest of our energy points to be balanced. A black candle is also a great alternative as well.  Our incense is now burning, our candle now lit and already a sense of a calming safe space has been created. Next, our personal favourite part (because we love anything pretty and sparkly), we choose our preferred grounding crystals. We had a hard time choosing between three crystals with amazing grounding properties: black tourmaline, obsidian and smokey quartz. All three work in their own ways and are just as magical!  Place both feet on the ground, sitting up straight and hold your preferred grounding crystal in your lap. Take a few moments to get comfortable; feel the essence of the stone, the smell of the incense, the flickering candle flame. Choose a breathing exercise that best suits you, we love square breathing so we’ll always recommend that.  Imagine roots growing from the soles of your feet, imagine them twisting and twirling all the way down to the center of the earth, anchoring you to Mother Nature. Once your roots have reached the center, now visualize divine white light flowing up, up, up into your feet and then reaching each chakra all the way to your crown (the top of your head).  Once the white light reaches your crown, picture it engulfing and dispeling any negative energy, thoughts and feelings until you simply feel indifferent. Able to look in from a bird’s eye view, a way that thoughts are no longer jumbled but linear and cohesive instead. You are filled with light and grounded to the earth in perfect harmony. You can continue to meditate as long as you wish or you also have the option to take advantage of the sacred space you created to do things such as journaling, shadow work or some tarot/oracle.  How to Celebrate Imbloc In Llewellyn’s Witchs’ Datebook 2024, it suggests to us to honour the signs of nature’s changes. One activity suggested is to place a package of seeds on your altar and to then meditate on how something as small as a seed will bring forth the sign of a changing season and the power the life course renewed. The author also suggests meditating and being extra attentive to any house plants you may have. We like this idea of spending time with plant spirits and thanking them for the life they bring. But there are so many ways besides tending to gardening and plants to celebrate this lovely day, because let’s face it, not all of us can identify as a “green thumb” or “green witch”. A Brigid Cross Traditionally a Bridgid Cross is made during the celebration of the goddess/saint by weaving together a cross in her honour. Arts and crafts are an amazing way to celebrate these new beginnings because the act symbolizes making something out of nothing, putting in your time and energy to be rewarded with something beautiful you can be proud of! After you are done making your Brigid Cross, you can hang it at your front door to prevent any misfortunes from coming into your home. We found this tutorial in case you would like to follow along and make your own! Spring Cleaning Yes, yes, yes! It is that time of the year again when we must begin the intimidating task of spring cleaning. Even though the task always seems daunting, when we are done with it, it can be the biggest relief.  Some witchy cleaning tips: -add Orange Blossom Cologne or Florida Water in your mop bucket to bring in happiness, prosperity and success (and also an amazing fresh spring smell as well). -wash your front door down with diluted Cinnamon Cologne on the first day of any month but being Imbolc makes it extra special! -wrap some bluing balls in a cloth and add it to your laundry to whiten and purify clothing while also bringing luck, success and also cleansing and driving away evil spirits. -spray some Van Van in your home, on your fresh linen and your couches for a wonderfully fresh citrus scent and also to bring in all that love, luck and prosperity! Home Blessing Imbolc is the perfect time to bless your new beginnings. Blessing your home, your loved ones and yourself allows an open gate of success to come with all of your hard work. There are so many ways to bless your life! -Bless yourself or loved ones with bath salts, blessing oils or soap. -Bless your home by burning herbs and/or resins such as sweetgrass, rose, frankincense and myrrh. -Bless your home also by washing the floors and walls down with Florida Water, Rose Water or Holy Water. -Burn a white candle with Home Blessing Oil. Send prayers out to the universe and call in your spirits as you do so. Wording does not have to be perfect as long as the intent is there. An example we chose: “Mother Mary, please bless our home so only prosperity, happiness and love is welcome to come through our door.” Onto Better Things! Overall, it is the perfect time to start a new chapter in life in whatever way that looks like to you. It is time to have the confidence to change the things we are unhappy with and to grow as individuals. We all have the might power of a lion to do so! Once we are equipped with the toolbelt of healthy habits, we have a perfect solid foundation to allow everything else to fall into place. It is never too late in life to start a project, finish a project and change our ways.  As they say, "Out with the old, in with the new." Happy Imbolc witches!

The summer sun is here and along with it comes a new feeling of hope, life and motivation. We are feeling energized and ready to take on any task at hand! Winter and Spring are now behind us as we can focus on more fun and lightheartedness. June is a very magical month, bringing fabulous holidays such as Father's Day, the Summer Solstice and this year’s Strawberry Moon in Capricorn (all of which we’ll have separate blog posts for coming!) So what else can we do this month outside of those three holidays? June is filled with so much magic and celebration in itself that comes with the shining sun and warm breeze. In the olden days, when summer came, it was a great symbol of hope and renewal. These days we are so lucky to have things such as heaters in our house, an infinite amount of blankets and snow gear to help us survive the winter.  Our ancestors weren’t so lucky though and winter was something harsh and dark to them. The land was barren, dry and unable to grow food and much reflected in their livelihoods. With winter came hunger, poverty and the cold- but summer was the true end of all things too dry and too cold.  In the springtime, we focused a lot on transition and planting seeds (both physical seeds and metaphorical seeds of what we wish to see grow in our lives), now is the beginning of harvest. If you know anything about gardening or farm crops, then you know that most crops are harvested at different times through the summer and even into early fall. Some of our plants can be harvested many times throughout these months as they continue to produce while some may only be able to be harvested once. That is the beauty and diverse opportunities that come along with summer and the month of June in general.  Blessings for the Ancestors  Praying for our ancestors and the evolution of their souls is a basis for many spiritual practices around the world. Our ancestors walked the earth before us and withstood lives full of hardship (much harder than we can imagine these days) that were full of famine, discrimination and war. But they survived just so we can be here. Oftentimes, because up until recent history, life was a lot harder than it is today in North America. Our ancestors harbour that pain with them, the pain that does inevitably come with life, in their afterlives. Their journey is not finished once they pass away, as many lessons come with the circle of life, even in the afterlife.  In turn, us and our family members still feel the impact of those hardships in us today. Science has confirmed that trauma can be passed down through genes, especially through a maternal line. In turn, praying for our ancestors and healing those hardships they went through in their human life will allow our entire families to heal. Praying for anyone must come from total compassion and selflessness to help heal and evolve their souls. How can we start?  Setting up an ancestor altar can be helpful and these are usually set up in areas of the house that are frequently communed by many family members in the house. The living room, a hallway or even a beautiful set up in the backyard works well for you!  What you will need: -a white altar cloth -a white or dark blue candle -offering plates or bowls -Florida Water or Rose Water Begin setting up your altar by cleansing your space with either sage, resin or Liquid Smudge and you can even wipe down your table with things like Liquid Smudge, Florida Water or Rose water to bless the foundation of your altar. Then you may place your cloth on top of the table and begin placing your candles, offering plates and even personal items or photographs of the ancestors you feel most connected to.  Lighting your candle should always come with a prayer or a mindful thought behind it. Candles on altars can be forms of giving your ancestors energy or even act as an open line of communication or “portal” in a sense. Lighting these candles invite your ancestors into the space and then blowing them out can signal closing that communication for the time being.  Today, we will be including our “first summer harvest” as June is the month of harvesting goods such as strawberries, green beans, onions, cherries, blueberries, tomatoes and asparagus. So, if you are able to, you can make a plate featuring these fruits and veggies (even if you buy them at the store and not from your own garden) and place them on one of your offering plates to be placed on your altar. In this way, you are sharing the first summer harvest with your passed on family. Along with this harvest and the candle, you can also pour Florida Water or Rose Water in an offering cup for an offering of blessings. As you stand or sit in front of this altar, you can pray in any way that best suits you. These can be already written prayers from your chosen religion or they can simply be words from the heart such as, “I pray for the evolution and healing of my ancestor’s souls. I pray for them to learn all the lessons they must in their soul journeys and to rest peacefully at the highest vibration.” Praying is a beautiful thing as it can be as subjective and open ended as you wish it to be. It is found in every religion and spiritual practice in the world and spoken words have much energy and power behind them. Voice is a very powerful thing and it is the first step to putting action out into the world.  Iced Tea It's no secret that over here at Smudge we love tea! Tea is an art that comes in all forms and kinds and this summer we're coming out with our own in house blends of iced tea! So, how can we incorporate them? Summer is the time to relax after a long a and harsh run of short days and cold winds. Now we can sit in our backyards, have picnics, sit on the balcony and find more enjoyment in the little things.  Tea has always brought people together socially and since we gave blessings to our loved ones in the afterlife, it's only fitting to do the same with our loved ones still with us together. Gift giving and acts of service are two very common love languages and we can do this by spending time with them outside, maybe enjoying some fruit and cheese with a big jug of iced tea. Iced Tea is like the drink of the summer. Getting out of the pool, putting together a bonfire or picnic or even just enjoying a class to yourself can bring the properties of these herbal blends to life. The famous Voodoo priestess. Marie Laveau was said to have held ceremonies on the Bayou St John, in New Orleans, commemorating St John's Eve. This April is an exciting month for not only all astrology in general but especially the moon! From the truly magical eclipse we got to experience just a couple weeks ago to the full moon coming up on the 23rd of this month! In April, we have what we call the Pink Moon. This name comes from early farmer’s almanacs from early American settlers and Indigenous peoples. And no, unfortunately the moon won’t actually appear pink as cool as that would be- it is actually named from a flower that blooms in April called the Creeping Pholx! Mercury Retrograde also ends on the 24th, which is the very next day after the full moon! You could say this month was a bit chaotic with the eclipse and Mercury Retrograde but it was all for a reason!  This full moon also happens to be in the sign of Scorpio. Scorpio is known as probably the most intense of the zodiacs. They are deeply in tune with their shadow shelf and their emotions may run deeper than the average person, though they usually keep these feelings to themselves. Scorpios are known observers, watching everything with open eyes and closed lips. They tend to keep their cards close to their chests and only speak on things when they truly feel the need to.  Scorpios are known to be strongly connected to their intuition (as the water signs typically are) and their psychic senses. This tells us to listen attentively to our deepest needs. Transformative periods always come as the seasons change, preparing us for the next chapter of our life. What has your mind, body and soul been telling you? Are you getting all the nutrition, sleep and exercise you need? Are you balancing work, family and your social life? Are you taking the time you need before making big decisions? If there’s that little voice in the back of your head, now is the time to listen to it! The Pink Moon brings the emotion and clarity of what we need to accomplish in whatever stage of our lives we may currently be in at this moment! So what can we do with this full moon to utilize this energy to the maximum?  St. Clare for Clarity  St. Clara, born as Chiara Offreduccio, was an Italian saint who lived during the 12th Century in Assisi. She is known as one of the first followers of the Italian mystic, Francis of Assisi, born Giovanni de Pietro de Bernardone and was canonized two years following his death. She founded the Order of the Poor Ladies, a covenant that lived in strict poverty. She also wrote the Rule of Life, which was the first set of monastic guidelines known to be written by a woman.  Her name Clare, meaning “clarity” comes from the belief that her modest lifestyle offered the shining light of clarity. In many folk practices, including Italian folk magic, she is used in spellwork for clarity! We can push back the stirring pot of emotions and intuition to deeper understand what our higher selves are trying to tell us. So what do we need for this spell? -St. Clare Clarity Oil -St. Clare Candle -Charcoal Pucks -Spearmint: all mints are super helpful in mental focus and clarity. This comes from the semi-shocking “spice” of that fresh mint smell. Think about how your toothpaste and mouthwash wakes you up in the morning- physical properties of herbs often influence their metaphysical properties.  -Tulsi: also known as Holy Basil, Queen of the Herbs. It’s holiness stems from the fact that Hindus regard it as a manifestation of the goddess Tulsi/Vrinda, the avatar of Lakshmi, and the consort of the god Vishnu. Regular use of Tulsi, can help support nervous system function, clarity of mind, memory and nervous tension. -Psychic Vision Powder: this is one of our made inhouse products and is a sachet powder that can be used in mojo bags, burned on charcoal like incense, or used to dress a candle. This incense powder is crafted to aid in your psychic senses and connect your conscious with your subconscious (your intuition)! Before performing any spellwork, we always suggest to cleanse your space so you have an energetically clean space to fill with the energy you wish you manifest as you perform this spell. You can cleanse your space in many different ways, but we prefer either smoking cleansing with sage or using a smoke free alternative such as a room spray. Next, light a charcoal puck in a fire space bowl and place a couple pinches of the Psychic Vision Powder on top of it to burn. This begins the set of the scene for our clarity spell.  Now it is time to dress our candle. Poke three holes in the top of the candle, we like to go a couple centimeters deep into the wax. We will then drop some of the St. Clare oil into these three holes before sprinkling a bit of spearmint and tulsi on top of the candle. You can also add the Psychic Vision powder as well. You don’t need a lot of these ingredients on the candle, it's always best to follow proper fire safety protocols when dressing a candle with dried herbs as they are quite flammable.  As you light the candle, you can repeat the words, “I am clear of mind. I am connected to my highest self. I know what I need for my highest good.” You can say these out loud or in your head but we like to speak out loud as voice can be a very powerful tool in magic.  When your candle is lit, it is a perfect time to meditate. Meditating during spellwork allows you to clear your mind of distractions, but in this case, we can think about the jumble of deadlines, lunch plans and finances during this spell. You don’t have to solve your issue at this moment, but focus on bringing clarity to these aspects of your life or any part of your life you may feel conflicted about.  This spell is not about fixing your conflicts in an instant, but instead it is about “opening the roads” of your mind. Sometimes the biggest roadblocks in our lives aren’t external things in our lives but our own minds trying to play against us. It is perfectly human.  This candle will last for seven days and it is perfect to do during the waning moon as well. The waning moon phases are all about focusing on the things in our lives that we wish to no longer have. To move away from as the moon moves away from full to new. The days after the full moon, as you relight this candle you can focus on mental obstacles moving away from your mind and clarity- bright white light- shining through the mind’s eye.  Crystals for the Pink Moon We thought of some of our favourite intuitive and clarifying crystals to use during this full moon. Charge them under the moon and keep them on your person as you go about the next few weeks and allow them to aid you in some mental guidance: Clear Quartz- The Master Healer and Stone of Clarity Clear Quartz is known as the master healing because it fits in any of the main energy points in our body, also known as the chakras. Clear Quartz has a natural property of clarity as it's name suggests but it can really help with anything you ask it to. For this month, we are using it in its most natural property.  Fluorite- The Stone of Focus Fluorite is a beautiful stone as it can come in many different colours, but most of the time you will find in in shades of blue, green and purple. As these colours suggest, it is very much a heavy upper chakra stone. Aiding in the heart, the throat for communication and creativity and of course the third eye for psychic senses. It is known as the stone of focus, and it is often a great stone for students, artists or anyone who needs some extra focus in their work! We often nickname it the "study stone" or "exam season stone."  Lapis Lazuli- The Stone of Psychic Awareness Lapis Lazuli has been a favoured stone by many peoples over hundreds of years, the most notable are the Ancient Egyptians. The Ancient Egyptians would decorate their sarcophagi with this memorizing blue stone. They would also use it to aid in astral travel and connection with their deities. Alongside other stones such as Malachite and Azurite, it would be crushed into a powder and used as cosmetic eyeshadow or as paint in artwork Lapis Lazuli is the stone of psychic awareness and communication. This is a perfect stone to connect to your highest self and guides to allow you to know what steps you must take.  A "Moony" Month With April being a month filled with many energies and the emotional waves of the watery Scorpio, it is important to allow yourself to take the time you need to take care of yourself. This will help you keep grounded when the air around us can appear pretty high strung.  Take the time you need this month to figure out your plans on your terms. Allow yourself to go with the flow while also taking action when your heart and mind tell you to! It's a beautiful time of the year and as we always like to say, balance is the key!

In mid February love is everywhere. Whether you celebrate valentines day or not, it is undeniable that this event has a palpable energy. This day, and the days leading up to it and after it are recognized as being romantic, sultry, loving and caring.  As spiritual practitioners we have an opportunity to tap into this energy. The great majority of our community recognizes if not celebrates Valentines day. Why fight this energy when we can use it for our own good.  On a side note, love has the capability to alter our brain chemistry. In these states we are more susceptible to unethical love magic.  We already have an Attract Love & Intimacy Spell bath for you, but let’s dive into the different types of love you can attract into your life. You will need Bath salts, a Rose Quartz stone, a White chime Candle, Chamomile, Blessed Thistle, and Lemon Verbena. You will also need a heat proof pitcher for this ritual.  Hold the Chamomile in your dominant hand and imbue them with the self-love you wish to feel after this bath is complete. The gentle yet strong energy. Place it in the pitcher. Hold your Blessed Thistle in your dominant hand and imbue it with the intention to purify and protect you. Visualize the herb drawing out the toxicity and specific aspects of yourself that no longer work for you. Place it in the pitcher. Hold the Lemon Verbena in your dominant hand and imbue it with the intention to  break bad habits, to bring out your inner beauty, and make others more receptive to it. Place it in the pitcher.  Fill your pitcher with boiling water and allow the mixture to steep for 5-15 minutes. Meanwhile pour your purifying salts into the bath and fill up your tub. As the days stretch to their glorious longest and the sun reigns supreme in the sky, we approach a magical time of year: the Summer Solstice, also known as Litha. This isn't just any day; it's the peak of the sun's power, a vibrant celebration of light, abundance, and the flourishing of nature. From this point forward, though the warmth lingers, the days will gradually begin to shorten, reminding us to savor every moment of this sun-drenched season. Ostara is one of the eight sabbats celebrated in the year of the wheel. Ostara celebrates the spring equinox.  Yule celebrates the Winter Solstice. Imbolc or Candlemas celebrates the first signs of spring. Ostara celebrates the Spring Equinox. Beltane celebrates May Day. Litha celebrates the Summer Solstice. Lughnasadh or Lammas celebrates the start of the harvest season Mabon celebrates the Autumn Equinox Samhain celebrates Halloween This time of year welcomes the full awakening of the Earth. It’s a celebration of fertility, virility, rebirth and awakening. It is a time for new beginnings, to plant new seeds of intention.  New beginnings is also associated with the element of air, the cardinal direction of East. The rising sun.  This is an extremely potent time to perform magic. The cosmos are aligned to benefit you and your intentions.  Below are 2 spells and 1 ritual you can perform to celebrate the spring equinox. Each one requires minimal to no materials but a whole lot of intention.  Before beginning any magic we suggest a deep dive journal session to find out what you want to manifest throughout the year. Time to get specific. Create a rough action plan so you know the steps you will have to take in order to birth your intentions into existence.  Manifestation Egg Decorating Spell  It is well known that Christians celebrate Easter. Known as Ostara, this celebration was stolen from the pagans.  This is a celebration of fertility, virility, and the return of life to the planet. The popular symbolism used throughout this occasion is the rabbit, associated with fertility, luck and creativity along with the egg, associated with creation and new life.  Before beginning make sure you can complete this ritual is 2 hours. A hard boiled egg can sit at room temperature for a maximum of 2 hours. If you want to ingest the egg at a later time place it in your fridge for storage.  Required Materials: A hardboiled egg Crayons and/or natural egg dye A White Candle Something to balance your egg on top of. A shot glass, a pop bottle cap, a crystal ball stand, or a flat ring. Before hard boiling your egg, cleanse the candle and your egg by running them under cold water for 30 seconds. Whisper your intentions to the candle and the egg, allowing your breath to wash over them. Really push your will into these items. Feel your personal power flowing into them through your hands. Charge them up! While your egg is cooking, you can spend time journaling about your intention. Writing a list of steps you will need to take in order to manifest your intention into existence.  Another option is to drink a cup of tea steeped with intention in order to further embody your intention.  Lastly, you could sit and meditate, visualizing your life with your intention fully manifest. Use all your senses, make the visualization as real as possible. Become lost in your visualization, as if it’s real and you’re currently living that life.  How long to boil an egg: 3 minutes for really soft boiled yolk and set white. 4 minutes for slightly set yolk and set white. 5 minutes for a medium cooked firmer yolk and white. 6 minutes for hard boiled with lightly soft yolk. 8 minutes for firmly hard boiled. Witch Tip: Have a bowl of water filled with ice next to your boiling water. Once your egg is boiled to your desired time give it an ice bath to stop the cooking process.  Once your egg is boiled and cooled down you can light your candle stating your intention out loud.  Place your egg on top of the stand and choose crayon colours that best represent your intention. You can use white if you want to the colour of the shell to show through. Begin drawing corresponding symbols or personalized sigils onto your egg.  This can be as intricate as you want. The more time spent on your egg the more intention you’ve pushed into it. You can create patterns using symbols, sigils and/or runes. Witch tip: To soften up the crayon for easier application hold it over the flame.   You can use natural ingredients to create natural egg dyes for added corespondences. For instance, if you want to manifest more money use a combination of turmeric and red cabbage to obtain a natural green dye. Make sure to cleanse and charge your natural ingredients with your intention before creating your dye.   Once your egg is beautifully decorated you can consume your egg, embodying your intention. While you’re pealing your egg visualize yourself cracking through blocks and sloughing off that which no longer serves you. Create space inside your body for your intention to fill.  While you are eating your egg return to your visualization of your life with your intention fully manifested. Feel the magic settle in your stomach and spread through your body. Feel it spread into your finger tips and toes, feel it settle behind your heart, into your head and down into your hair. Feel yourself becoming a magnet for your intention and trust that the universe will bring it into your life.  Planting Intention Gardening Spell Since Ostara and the spring equinox is a time of renewal of the earth and fertility, sowing and planting seeds is a wonderfully appropriate ritual to perform. As your plants grow so to will your intention.  Pick a plant that corresponds with your intention. Do some research so you are prepared to properly maintain the plant. Research the soil needed, How to germinate the seed, the light conditions best suited to grow that plant and how to feed it.  Required Materials: Plant seeds Your potting mix A pot A clear quartz point Moon, sun, rain, snow, storm or sterile water Begin by prepping your plant container. Cleanse it by running it under water for 30 seconds. You can add an additional layer of magic by drawing and painting crafted sigils or symbols on and over it. You can also write your intention around the brim of the pot.  Take your clear quartz and cleanse it by running it under cold water for 30 seconds. Whisper your intentions to the crystal, allowing your breath to wash over it. Really push your will into this item. Feel your personal power flowing into it through your hands. Charge it up! Place your charged crystal at the bottom of your plant container and fill your pot halfway with your potting mix.  Spend some time with your seeds. Whisper to them your intention. Have a conversation with them. Let them know the various steps you’ll take to bring your intention into existence. Tell it your plan.  Once your seed is charged with your intention place it in your pot. Fill your pot with potting mix and push your will and intention into the filled pot.  Water your plant until it runs out the bottom, knowing that your feeding your plant and your intention.  Place your spell plant somewhere with appropriate lighting and visit it daily. Continue talking to it and letting it know what steps you’ve taken through the day/week. While watering it tell it updates and let it know how much your appreciate it. Spend quality time with your spell, it’s a living being and the more love and energy you pore into it the more powerful it’ll be.  Etheric Planting Movement Ritual  Ostara and the spring equinox come with a burst of new and fresh energy. The fertility of the celebration lights a fire within us all to create, to begin and awaken our bodies.  If gardening isn’t your thing but you have a desire to plant seeds then this ritual dance could be the solution for you.  The only requirements are your body, a space to move and music to move with. I personally like to choose music that is either instrumental or in a different language. For me lyrics tend to take me out of the trance state that movement meditation can foster.  My favourite witchy albums to dance to include: Collide by Beats Antique, Herja by Danheim, In Return by ODESZA, Kykakacha by Otyken and Slow + Bridges by Eivor.  Before beginning have a clear direction of where the cardinal directions are. Begin your spell with Light Stretches When your music is playing begin by moving your body with some light stretches. Do all the following exercises to the rhythm of your breath.  Raise your hands in the air and bend to the right then the left.  Bend forwards and try to touch your toes and backwards with your hands supporting your lower back.  Move your hips in a circular motion, then switch directions.  Sit into a wide squat and come out of it and reach to the ceiling.  Cast your magical circle using your body Face the direction of the East. Dance to the element of air, using movements that remind you of being blown around in the wind. Notice the breath entering your lungs. Exhale deeply, connecting to the element of Air.  Turn to the South and reach your arms up. Dance like you are a flame. Notice the energy in your body, the electricity in your brain making connections. Connect to the element of Fire. Turn to the West and dance like your waves in the ocean moving in and out on the shoreline. Connect to the element of water by noticing the blood running through your veins, the spit in your mouth, and the bodily fluids that help your body move.  Turn to the North and begin stomping your feet. Connect to the element of Earth by noticing the bones in your body. Raise your hands up and acknowledge those above you and the cosmic energy.  Bend down towards the ground and acknowledge those below you, your ancestors and the land spirits.  Bring your hands to your heart centre and acknowledge your spirit within you. Extend your hands out like an offering and acknowledge that outside of you.  Your magical space is now cast.  Plant your seeds of intention While you’re dancing begin going through the motions of gardening.  Begin by tilling the soil. Claw your hands and rake them in front of you.  Till the soil all around you in every direction. Next dig the holes for your seeds in every direction. Plant your seeds in the holes. Think about every intention you are planting as you drop your seeds into the holes.  Cover your seeds up with dirt. As you pull the dirt towards you imaging pulling your intentions closer to yourself.  Now water your seeds. Dance like the rain and drench all of your newly planted crop.  Rise like the sun breaking through the clouds and shining it’s beautiful light on your crop.  Be the plants as they grow and push out new leaves. Visualize your plants growing tall. Be the wind blowing through your plants, making them stronger and more resilient.  Have your plants begin to emerge into beautiful flowers.  Be the insects pollinating your flowers. Be the plant as it begins to grow your harvest.  Dance the fruits and vegetables ready to harvest. Dance that you are harvesting your crop and visualize your life with your intention being fully manifested in this world.  bow your head in gratitude to close your circle: Outside of your body Inside your body Thanking those below and those above. Thank the elements from the direction of North, West, South, and East.  The most underrated ingredient to any spell is time. It’s difficult to be patient once we cast our spells and perform our rituals. We are so used to instant gratification in today’s society. When I am being impatient I like to remind myself that my spells manifest when they are ready to. When I’ve made enough space in my life for it, when I have the capacity to accept my manifestation. It’s important not to be focused on exact outcomes. Sometimes what we want isn’t in our best interests. Often my intentions do manifest but in a way that I hadn’t considered and it always works out in my favour.  Trust in the universe, trust in yourself. Blessed spring-equinox and Ostara!

On February 24th, 2024 we have our second full moon of the year and our first full moon since the Lunar New Year. This full moon is in the sign of Virgo and it is the first feminine earth sign of the year. This time of the year symbolizes the end of winter and beginning of spring and Virgo symbolizes that connection to Mother Nature through its sign of the Maiden. Virgos are known to be hardworking, grounded, and reliable. They do not get too caught up in the “what ifs” and “but ifs” and more so focus on the logical facts laid out in front of them. This helps keep them organized, patient and helpful. These are some of the perfect energies to harness with the full moon and the new cycle of growth that comes along with spring. In the spring, we focus on getting rid of the old so we can watch new opportunities grow alongside the budding trees. We are spring cleaning; finally getting rid of all that junk in our basements and garages, finally dusting in all those hard to reach places no one can see and finally pulling all those nasty weeds in our flower beds.  This is Virgo's favourite time of year. Though for most of us these chores seem like a drag we dread completing all winter, we can use this productive energy of the full moon to begin our planning! Goals for the Full Moon! While Virgo has the amazing qualities of a productive person, they also struggle with things like perfectionism and being a little too critical of themselves and others! This full moon will bring on a need to quickly organize everything around us and overthinking our every move. While we should very well ride the wave of this burst of inspiration, we must remember to go easy on ourselves and others in this time as well. We can get things done without being so picky and judgemental. That is always how we end up pushing ourselves too much and dealing with burnout. The best thing we can do is go slow and to not be so hard on ourselves. Sometimes there is only so much planning we can do before we must let the universe run its course.  This clarity of the full moon is what will keep us balanced and in check! Tools for Clarity! We created some ideas just to ease ourselves into the spring cleaning and letting go! We brainstormed some ideas to help dial down some things we can tackle first! -Go through all your winter clothes, what did you wear often? What did you always cast aside while picking out your outfit for the day? There is a good rule of thumb that says if you haven’t worn an item of clothing in the last eight months, you probably don’t really need it. Clothing actually makes up a scary amount of waste in landfills due to the rise of fast fashion so getting rid of our clothes we no longer need and donating them to shelters or other causes allows us to recycle these perfectly good garments while keeping our waste out of landfills. In cases where your sweaters may have too many holes or maybe that one cotton shirt is just stretched a little too thin, reach out to your crafty friends! Crafty hobbyists are the perfect recyclers and they may be able to take that bag of worn out clothes off your hands! -Books! Whether you are a reader or not, we all have a shelf somewhere in our homes stacked with unread or long finished books. Maybe you grabbed that cookbook you never actually made a recipe from or that business you ordered online in the middle of the night when you got a random inspiration for entrepreneurship. Regardless, there’s two ways we can go amount these books: Our first idea is to pick the ones you realistically find yourself reading and enjoying and create what book lovers call a “TBR Shelf” which just means a “to be read shelf.” This helps prioritize the books we want to read next and help us decide which ones we know won’t be turning past the first page. With the books you have decided not to read, there are so many libraries and youth centres looking for books! Once again, this helps out both yourself, other people and the earth by recycling!  Lastly, we find that we have tons of things in storage we longer touch. This could be things like art supplies, sporting equipment, workout gear, the list goes on and on. I get it, we all have the urge to keep things because what if we need that one specific item on a random Tuesday in two years? Again, sticking to our rule of thumb; if we haven’t used these tools in the last year, how much do we really need them? These items can be donated or asked around in your neighbourhood if anyone could make some good use of these items! One man’s trash is another man’s treasure as they say! In the Spring of Things This year is all about change and we see that more and more in the astrology of the first few months of 2024! Once again, we try our best to keep the balance because after all, that is when we are at our best versions of ourselves. A new year doesn’t have to be stressful and we can have fun and embrace the changes that are coming our way!

Whether you love or hate cooking, adding an element of magic while preparing your meals can not only make cooking fun but also bring you the added benefits of mindful cooking. When we say mindful cooking, it is really just about understanding the metaphysical properties to your ingredients as you prepare and make a meal. Everything has a metaphysical property behind it, whether that be fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices! They say that, “a meal made with love always tastes better.” It’s not only a cute sentiment but in a way rings a lot of truth. When your mom or spouse makes a warm and homemade meal, every bite is filled with the knowledge your loved one poured their time and energy into making something for you. Loving energy is poured into the meal and therefore adds that energy to the food. This is just how any type of spellwork is conducted; by using the energy of yourself and the energy of your tools- in this case ingredients! To make cooking a bit fun, think of it like potion making because in a way it quite literally is potion making. Adding thought behind each ingredient you add can be mixed together for a final goal. You can cook any dinner with the intention of good health, good fortune, love or even spiritual cleansing. Magic in the kitchen comes from the joy of not just creating a meal for the body but also for the soul. There is a lot of heart and attentiveness that comes with cooking in general; constantly checking to make sure nothing is burning, that there is a perfect amount of each seasoning added and always a taste test to make sure everything is blending together as it should. A lot of energy goes into making a good meal you’re proud of! Every ingredient holds a purpose in the physical sense, so why not the magical? Setting the Scene Before any spellwork, a good cleanse is always called for! This allows a clean slate for us to draw in the energy we desire. Cleansing can be done in so many ways! Of course, the classic way most of us cleanse is by burning herbal bundles such as white sage, blue sage, cedar or rue. Dried herbs aren’t our only options though! We also love cleansing with resins such as frankincense, copal or even amber! Or, if a smoke free alternative works better for you, there are Liquid Smudge Sprays or Cedar and Sage Sprays that cleanse just as well! Enchanting Your Tools When you think of a typical witch’s tool, a giant dusty grimoire or maybe a table sized black cauldron may come to your mind (even those tools are totally awesome) your practical tools will do just as well! Whether it be your stir spoon or spatula or your favourite frying pan, they can all be blessed with good fortune. Enchanting or blessing an object can be done in so many different ways, some like to draw ancient runes on the handles of their cooking utensils or tie red string to the top of them- we like to anoint our tools with oils. Anointing oils can be used in so many ways even outside of the kitchen; to dress a candle, dropped in a diffuser or bath water, or even just as perfume! Protection oils can be anointed in runes, sigils or religious symbols on the body, windows, doors and so much more! In this case, we will be using anointing our cooking utensils with any type of Blessing Oils which could also include Sweetgrass, Palo Santo or our in house blend Blessing Oil! You can drop just a little bit of oil on your pointer finger and then draw a rune, sigil, cross, pentacle or any other symbol you wish on the handles!  Magical Ingredients Mother Nature has gifted us with a bountiful land full of wheat, rice, vegetables and fruits and we are so lucky to be able to even grow a lot of our own food in our backyards! Even more so, we have grocery stores and farmer’s markets at our disposal! Our options are endless so it's bound to find ingredients that match what you look for to include in your meals both in taste and magic!  Think of the two most basic ingredients for some of your most beloved recipes! What comes to mind? Maybe onion and garlic? Well, they both have amazing protection, purification and banishing properties! Other ingredients like corn, rice and wheat are usually used in prosperity spellwork because they are foods that come in plentiful amounts! Making dinners like stir frys, pastas, soups and burrito bowls allows a lot of room to add many colourful veggie and herbal ingredients to layer up those properties.  Herbs Herbs are one of the main ingredients for any spellwork, not just the cooking kinds! Whether it be to soak in a bath, dress a candle or burn they are almost always included! But there are so many basic herbs you would already be adding to a dish that could elevate the magic in your pot! Even just salt and pepper have amazing qualities themselves! Salt has very strong cleansing and purification properties and black pepper can be used for protection! Rosemary is used for luck, love and money! Basil can be used for protection, happiness and wealth! Overall, there are so many ways to bring good energy into not only your cooking space but your meals. It brings a new sense of life to the way we think about cooking and even the way we feel when we cook. We're all human, we all have to do it, so why not make the most out of it? Mothers are magical, there’s no doubt about it. Being a mother and family in general is so much more than blood, but it is something our souls form. Motherhood looks different for everyone and that’s what makes it so beautiful. No experience is the same and that’s why we look to our mothers for the wisdom, understanding and skill sets that will carry us throughout the rest of our lives! Mother’s Day is the day to bring that mindful acknowledgement to the forefront of our lives and to honour and thank them! We also understand that not everyone has a healthy relationship with their mother. There are many, many people out there who have been mistreated, shunned or hurt deeply by their mothers. We want to honour the sons and daughters of those mothers today as well and give them meditative and healing options for them to partake in on this day as well!  Honouring Gaia on Mother’s Day Gaia, Mother Earth, Mother Nature- however you wish to refer to her as, she is what we walk on everyday. She is a primordial goddess and the personification of the Earth in Greek Mythology. Gaia emerged from Chaos and is considered the supreme or mother goddess. All gods and goddesses are descended from her through her union with Uranus (Heaven) and Pontus (Sea). Indigenous peoples of North America have always honoured the beauty and chaos that is Mother Nature. She is the grass beneath our feet, the leaves rustling above us, the flowers blooming in the spring. Mother Nature is all around us and the most ancient and wise of our civilizations honour her before anything. Algonquian legend says that "beneath the clouds lives the Earth-Mother from whom is derived the Water of Life, who at her bosom feeds plants, animals and human" (Larousse 428). She is otherwise known as Nokomis, the Grandmother. Honouring both a sunny day and a rainy one just the same. The belief in the natural way of life, of oneness with each other and all living beings is often lost to us in a post-colonized and busy life of the 21st Century. All our computers and social media apps and reality shows often pull us from our true nature as human beings. If we take some time to connect with the outside, we are able to find a sense of peace and tranquility in the go go go of our lives. So for those with estranged mothers or those who want to take some time to honour the goddess of our Earth, we’ve come up with some activities you can do! Charging With Gaia: The Earth is a great form of transmuting negative energy into positive energy! You have probably been told a few times that a form of cleansing your crystals is actually to bury them and then dig them up again a couple hours or days later (usually in the consistency of a holy number like 3 days or 3 hours) and they will both be cleansed and charged! This comes from the idea of the natural cycle of wildlife. Think of the life cycle of any of the creatures even found in your own backyard! The squirrels and birds and chipmunks! They feed from the earth, gain life from the earth and one day when they die, their bodies will feed the earth back and bring forth new life. To some it can seem morbid to think about, but once again, that is the beautiful and chaotic balance Gaia brings us.  Like a life cycle, our energy turns and flows as well. We will always fluctuate our energy based on the different phases of our lives that we go through! It is unrealistic for anyone to constantly be “high vibrational.” Expecting anything else is refuting our own human nature and the lessons we are here to learn! So, let the Earth cleanse and recharge you! Connecting with nature is in turn, our human nature as well! We were made to feel connected to the Earth, to both feed from it and give back to it just as any other living being here! Connecting will calm us so we can be mindful of our thoughts, feelings and in turn behaviours. The Cognitive Triangle shows us how all of these impact and lean back on each other. Having a clear mind can help us with that!   Find a comforting place in nature, this can be anywhere as simple as your backyard and kick those shoes off! Let your bare feet touch the grass, the dirt, maybe an ant will run across your toes- and this may be uncomfortable to some at first but take a few minutes to really pay attention to your senses. Close your eyes and don’t just focus on the ground beneath you but also the air around you! The wind, maybe there’s a faint smell of spring flowers, birds singing or grasshoppers chirping. Let yourself live in the moment like this until you find yourself breathing steadily and comfortably before continuing.  We suggest building an outside altar, it doesn’t have to be anything fancy, it could just be on your backyard picnic table or even on top of a rock! Place some things on this altar that represent the Earth to you. If you are a crystal collector feel free to place some of your favourites on this! Some wonderful Earth element crystals we love are Moss Agate, Tree Agate or Rhyolite (also known as Rainforest Jasper)! But if not, any rock off the ground, flower or even a piece of bark can symbolize earth to you! The Earth is plentiful and bountiful, and it can be fun to represent this by placing a bunch of different natural findings on this altar as well! You can have fun with this and decorate it to the maximum or you can simply place one thing of importance instead! It’s up to you! This altar allows you a space to channel your energy and fully dive into the purpose of your meditation!  Light some incense, we love palo santo resin and amber resin but you can always choose your own favourite! Then light a candle, we suggest either lighting a pink, green or white candle and then beginning your favourite grounding method! A classic one and also one our favourites is the tree root method, because it is both grounding and recharging and using the Earth to do so! This meditation can be done anytime whenever you may be feeling stressed, anxious or drained!  Close your eyes and keep your breath comfortably even before imagining tree roots forming from your feet and growing down into the earth. Watch them in your mind’s eye as they travel down, down, down into the Earth’s core where a large ball of light waits to heal you. Once your roots reach the light, the light travels back up these roots until they reach each root. This bright light travels from your feet all the way up your body to your head. You can reach your arms to the sky, as if they were treetops and picture the light reaching the tips of your fingers! You can repeat this meditation as many times as you like and as your candle burns you can use this energy to perform any divination such as tarot or oracle cards, rune casting or using a pendulum with a pendulum mat! In this meditative state it is also really good to do some journaling or shadow work!  Shadow Work Prompts to Help Heal the Inner Child: Healing our inner child is a lifelong process that we must always be mindful of. There is much that can be experienced through those crucial formative years of our lives, some good and some bad! We are big supporters of things such as counseling and therapy as everyone struggles with at least something and there is no shame in taking care of our mental health!
