Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs, which presents over 400 herbs and plants from around the world, along with their magical uses, planetary/elemental correspondences, and folklore. If you practice natural magic, herbal witchcraft, or simply want a solid reference for the magical uses of plants (and by extension substances), this encyclopedia is a valuable addition to your library.
📚 Key Features
-
Alphabetical format: enables you to look up an herb or plant by name and find its magical associations quickly.
-
Each entry typically gives: common name, Latin or alternate names, element or planetary rulership, gender (in magical sense), magical uses (purpose such as protection, love, banishing), and sometimes how to use it (incense, sachet, oil, etc).
-
For example: A review noted the book provides “the proper name, and magical intentions” among other data.
-
It is geared for magical/ritual use rather than medicinal or botanical detail. A quote explains: “This is very much a magical reference text … If you are trying to figure out which herb to use for spellwork, this may be the book for you.”

The Protective Power of Amulets
Amulets are employed by almost every culture around the world and exist in many varieties. Most amulets are worn by the bearer and may include gems, coins, pendants, rings, written words, and plant parts, such as roots. Listed below are a few typical types of amulets.
- Spiritual deities: The image of a sacred deity is said to be infused with their powers.
- Religious or spiritual symbolism: Images such as a crucifix or any other sacred object that contains a representation of protection.
- Hamsa Hand: Believed by many Jews, Muslims, and Christians to ward off the evil eye.
- Silver dimes: If worn as an anklet, it’s believed the wearer cannot be affected by any negative spells cast by being stepped over.
- Mirror charms: Worn or pinned to your garment, with the reflective side facing away from your body, these deflect negative energies back to the sender.
All amulets ought to be cleansed before wearing as we do not know who has handled them before they came into our hands.
Miss Aida’s Chinese Wash Recipe for Spiritual House Cleansing and Purification
- One 32-ounce bottle of Murphy Oil Soap
- One 1/2 bottle of quality Van Van Oil
- 2 ounces of liquid pure castile soap (to dilute the Murphy Oil Soap)
- One frankincense incense tear (to enhance the power of the formula)
- 1 tablespoon of lemongrass
- 13 new broom straws (aids in spiritual cleansings)
- A little bit of your saliva
Remove about three ounces of Murphy Oil Soap from the bottle to make room then add the Van Van Oil and castile soap to the bottle. Agitate the bottle to disperse the liquids. Add the frankincense tear, followed by the lemongrass, then the broom straws. Replace the cap and gently shake the bottle. Once it appears that the lemongrass has been dispersed, remove the cap. Place your mouth close to the lip of the bottle and recite Psalm 23. Then respectfully release a little of your saliva into the bottle to activate or charge the ingredients. Your Chinese Wash is now ready for use. Use about one-quarter cup of Chinese Wash per bucket of water. A new mop is preferable to wash the floor, but a clean mop will suffice. You will also need clean rags to wipe down walls and other surfaces.
This definitive guide to Hoodoo plant magic contains detailed information on dozens of roots and herbs.
In Hoodoo Herbal, Starr Casas shares a lifetime of experience and family secrets in her usual plain-spoken, direct, and friendly style.
Mama Starr makes Hoodoo plant magic accessible to all. For example, snake plants (Dracaena trifasciata)—common houseplants that are readily available at garden stores and supermarkets—possess a long reputation for successfully keeping lying tongues from disrupting your home. As their leaves resemble a double-edged sword, they are believed able to cut through malicious works (spells) that may have been sent against you. They are valued for their anti-gossip properties.
The book features information about a wide variety of plants and how to use them, as well as practical tips regarding planting seeds, cutting, transplanting, and caring for plants so that they will care for you, too. Starr advises that as the plants thrive and grow, the works for which they are used will grow stronger, too—as will you.
