Gold plated dream catcher keychain with mutli-coloured rhinestones and faux pearls.

Origin & History:
Dreamcatchers originate from the Ojibwe (Chippewa) people, an Indigenous nation of North America. Traditionally known as asabikeshiinh (meaning “spider”), they were inspired by the protective spirit of the Spider Woman, who was believed to watch over children and families. Mothers and grandmothers would handcraft dreamcatchers using natural materials such as willow hoops, sinew, and feathers, placing them above sleeping areas to guard against harmful dreams.

According to tradition, the woven web acts as a filter—catching negative dreams and spirits of the dreams while allowing positive dreams to pass through. Good dreams gently slide down the feathers to the sleeper below, while bad dreams are trapped in the web and dissipate with the morning light.

Over time, dreamcatchers spread beyond the Ojibwe to other Indigenous groups and eventually became widely recognized symbols of protection and spiritual connection. Today, they are appreciated both for their cultural roots and their symbolic meaning, though it’s important to honor and respect their Indigenous origins.
