Horseshoes have long been regarded as powerful symbols of luck, protection, and prosperity across many magical traditions. Traditionally made from iron—a metal historically believed to repel harmful spirits and negativity—horseshoes have been used for centuries in witchcraft, Hoodoo, folk magic, and European protective practices. Hung above doorways, incorporated into spell work, or kept on altars, they are believed to attract blessings while guarding the home from unwanted energy.
The crescent shape of the horseshoe is also symbolically connected to the moon, fertility, and abundance. In many traditions, an upward-facing horseshoe is said to “hold” luck and blessings, while a downward-facing horseshoe may be used to pour blessings and protection onto those who enter beneath it.
Sourced: These are used, iron horseshoes pulled from a variety of horses in Western Canada. Each one is unique and different, and they come from all sorts of different horses. The shoes are in varying in sizes, thicknesses, shapes, and wear patterns. Each shoe is custom shaped for a horses foot, and is usually worn for 6 weeks before it is replaced. Some shoes have a large amount of wear on them, others have less.
Magical Uses of Horseshoes:
- Protection against negativity and harmful energy
- Attracting luck, prosperity, and abundance
- Guarding homes, businesses, and sacred spaces
- Strengthening road opening and success work
- Used in protection jars, altars, and folk charms
Traditional Ways to Use Horseshoes in Spell Work:
Protection for the Home:
Hang a horseshoe above your front door with the ends facing upward to collect and hold protective energy and good fortune within the home.
Prosperity & Business Luck:
Place a horseshoe near cash registers, business entrances, or prosperity altars alongside coins, cinnamon, or green candles to attract financial growth and opportunity.
Road Opening & Success Work:
Use a horseshoe in road opening rituals by placing written intentions or petitions beneath it during candle work to symbolize clearing obstacles and inviting progress.
Witch Bottles & Protection Jars:
Small horseshoe nails or iron fragments are often added to protection jars or folk charms for grounding and defensive energy.
Moon & Fertility Magic:
Because of its crescent shape, some practitioners incorporate horseshoes into lunar rituals, fertility work, or abundance altars connected to divine feminine energy.
Historical & Folk Beliefs:
Horseshoes have appeared in magical folklore for centuries throughout Europe and North America. Iron was widely believed to repel spirits and curses, and blacksmiths themselves were once considered to possess mystical power due to their mastery of fire and metal. In many folk traditions, finding or receiving a horseshoe was considered an especially fortunate omen.
How to Bless and anoint your Horseshoe:
First, cleanse your horseshoe to get rid of any residual energy with Rue & Sage, or wash with a bath made with Espante Muerte, Rue and/or Hyssop. You can do both. Let dry and anoint your horseshoe with Van Van Oil or Rue Oil. Van Van is a traditional formula for Luck, Love and Protection. Rue provides deep cleansing, protection and spiritual boundaries, while drawing luck and blessings.
