Van Van Oil is a traditional New Orleans Hoodoo formula used to clear away bad luck, crossed conditions, and spiritual residue, then turn the situation toward luck, protection, success, and open roads. Reach for it when circumstances feel stuck, plans keep going wrong, or you need to clear the old condition before beginning something new.

All Van Van products are made by Michelle here at Smudge. A portion of your purchase goes to support our local Hiatus House.

Van Van is especially useful for changing the tone around a home, business, journey, job search, money matter, or personal working. It can be used to dress candles, anoint petitions and talismans, feed mojo bags, or strengthen floor washes and spiritual-cleansing preparations.

• Clear bad luck and crossed conditions
• Open roads and remove obstacles
• Turn a difficult situation in a better direction
• Draw luck, success, opportunity, and favourable outcomes
• Protect the home, business, personal belongings, and ritual space
• Dress candles, petitions, mojo bags, charms, and talismans

How to Use

For candle work: Apply a small amount to your fingertips and lightly dress a white candle for cleansing and protection or a green candle for luck, money, and opportunity. Keep oil away from the wick and flame.

For petitions: Anoint the four corners of a petition paper. If drawing luck or opportunity, move toward the centre. Fold the paper toward yourself and place it beneath a candle, carry it with you, or add it to a mojo bag.

For mojo bags and talismans: Add a small amount to feed a luck, protection, success, or road-opening hand. A little oil is enough; do not saturate fabric or paper.

For a floor wash: Add a few drops to prepared wash water. Clean from the back of the space toward the front door while praying for bad luck and obstacles to leave. Finish at the threshold and ask for clear roads, protection, and better opportunities to enter.

Size: 10 ml glass dropper bottle.

Clear the way and call in new opportunities with our Road Opener Bundle — a complete working kit curated for breaking through blockages, removing obstacles, and opening doors to abundance, success, and forward movement.

When doing road opening work, be aware and mindful of things that suddenly don't work or dead ends that come up. It's not bad luck, this means your spell is working. Use this as a message and unveiling of what you need to change, remove or pivot to move forward. Also be mindful of what is working or opportunities, or people that appear, and seize the opportunity.

This bundle combines traditional Abre Camino (Road Opener) botanicals with essential ritual tools to support a powerful and complete road opening working.

What's Inside

• Abre Camino Road Open Bath Plants — ritual cleansing bath to wash away what blocks you
• Road Opener (Abre Camino) Soap — daily cleansing to clear obstacles from your energy
• Road Opener Abre Camino Oil — dress candles, anoint petition papers, and feed your workings
• Road Opener Spray 8oz — cleanse your space and aura on the go
• Rue - Ruda — a powerful protective and road-clearing herb worked in hoodoo and conjure traditions
• Gold Green & Orange Jar Candle — burn to draw prosperity, luck, and open roads
• Cinnamon Chips — worked for speed, success, and drawing opportunity fast

How to Work This Bundle

Step 1 — Prepare Your Bath

Brew the Abre Camino bath plants as a strong tea by steeping them in boiling water for at least 10 minutes. Let it cool, then strain and add to your bathwater. As you soak, visualize every door that has been closed to you swinging open. See the path ahead of you clear and bright. Bathe from the neck down, moving your hands upward over your body to draw good things toward you. Do this for 3, 7, or 9 consecutive days for the strongest results.

Step 2 — Write Your Petition

On a small piece of paper, write clearly what road you want opened — a new job, a fresh start, a business opportunity, freedom from a situation that has kept you stuck. Write your name over it three times, then turn the paper and write your petition over your name. Sprinkle cinnamon chips and a pinch of rue over the petition to add speed and protection to your request. Fold the paper toward you to draw the outcome in.

Step 3 — Dress Your Candle

Apply the Road Opener Oil to your Gold Green & Orange Jar Candle, working from the bottom up to draw your desire toward you. As you dress the candle, speak your intention aloud — state clearly what you are asking for and why. Place your folded petition under the candle.

Step 4 — Light Your Candle & Work Daily

Light your dressed candle and let it burn. Each day while the candle burns, use the Road Opener Soap in your daily shower to continue clearing your energy, and spray your space and yourself with the Road Opener Spray to keep the environment clear of obstacles and stagnant energy. If you need to leave the house, extinguish the candle safely and relight it when you return.

Step 5 — Close the Working

Once the candle has burned completely, dispose of the wax and any remaining herbs away from your home — at a crossroads is traditional. Give thanks for the doors that are opening and remain open to opportunity arriving in unexpected ways.

Balm of Gilead (Populus candicans / Populus balsamifera) is a traditional spiritual and herbal botanical long associated with healing, reconciliation, love, comfort, and emotional restoration. These fragrant resinous buds have been used for centuries in spiritual practices for soothing emotional wounds, strengthening relationships, and encouraging peace after conflict. Mentioned historically in biblical and Middle Eastern traditions, Balm of Gilead became symbolic of healing and comfort for both the body and spirit.

In Hoodoo and folk magic, Balm of Gilead is especially valued in reconciliation work, love spells, forgiveness rituals, and communication magic. It is commonly added to mojo bags, love sachets, honey jars, spiritual baths, incense blends, and candle work intended to mend broken relationships, soften anger, and restore harmony between people. Many practitioners use it in spells focused on emotional healing, friendship, peace, and attracting loving energy.

Traditionally in herbal practices, Balm of Gilead buds were infused into salves, oils, and teas for their soothing aromatic qualities. Historically, they were associated with comfort for sore muscles, respiratory support, skin soothing, and general wellness in folk herbal traditions.

Magical Correspondences:

• Latin Name: Populus candicans / Populus balsamifera
• Element: Water
• Planet: Venus
• Gender: Feminine
• Chakra Associations: Heart Chakra
• Magical Uses: Love, reconciliation, healing, forgiveness, peace, emotional comfort, friendship

Spiritual & Magical Uses:

• Added to reconciliation and forgiveness spells
• Used in honey jars and sweetening work
• Carried in mojo bags for love and emotional healing
• Burned in incense blends for peace and harmony
• Used in candle work focused on restoring communication and affection

Traditional Herbal Uses:

• Traditionally infused into oils and salves for soothing support
• Historically associated with comfort and relaxation
• Used in folk herbal practices for respiratory and skin support
• Valued for its aromatic resin and calming qualities

Balm of Gilead buds are generally not recommended for internal use unless specifically prepared and labeled by a qualified herbal professional. While the buds of Populus balsamifera and related poplar species have historical use in folk herbalism, they contain compounds similar to salicylates (related to aspirin), which may cause reactions or side effects in some people.

Potential concerns include:

• Allergic reactions, especially in people sensitive to aspirin or salicylates
• Stomach irritation or nausea
• Possible interactions with blood thinners or certain medications
• Not recommended during pregnancy or for young children without professional guidance

A deeply symbolic herb of healing and reconciliation, Balm of Gilead remains a respected botanical in spiritual and herbal traditions alike.

Ancestor Money — also known as Joss Paper, Ghost Money, or Spirit Money — is a traditional paper offering burned to transmit wealth, resources, and care from the physical world to the spirit realm. Working with ancestor money is a way to honour your bloodline, feed your dead, and maintain a reciprocal relationship with the spirits of those who came before you.

As the paper burns, the offering is carried across the veil — a gesture of love, respect, and continued relationship.

Traditional Uses

• Filial piety & ancestral respect — in Chinese folk religion, Taoism, and Buddhism, burning ancestor money is an act of deep reverence, providing for your deceased relatives in the afterlife just as you cared for them in life
• Qingming Festival (Tomb Sweeping Day) — burned at gravesites to honor and provide for ancestors during this central festival of remembrance
• Hungry Ghost Festival (Lunar Seventh Month) — offerings burned during Ghost Month to provide for wandering spirits and prevent suffering in the afterlife
• Providing material comfort — the smoke acts as a spiritual conduit, converting paper notes into real currency and supplies ancestors can use to buy food, clothing, housing, or luxuries in the spirit world

Occult & Modern Magick Uses

• Clearing ancestral debt — used to dissolve negative karma and spiritual debt carried by your ancestors; with that burden lifted, your dead are more able to show up and support your workings
• Ancestor altar work — burn regularly to open lines of communication, show gratitude, and build a strong, reciprocal relationship with your bloodline spirits
• Hoodoo & rootwork — offered at the ancestor altar or gravesite to petition the dead for guidance, protection, or assistance in spell work
• Samhain & ancestral feast days — burn during the thinning of the veil to strengthen communication with those who have passed
• Gravesite offerings — burn at the graves of loved ones on anniversaries, birthdays, or death days
• Petition work — write your petition or a loved one’s name on the money before burning to send your request directly to your ancestors along with the offering
• Prosperity & manifestation — a well-provided ancestor is better equipped to bless and advocate for their living descendants; burning money can unblock financial stagnation by addressing root-level ancestral burdens
• Crossing over & memorial rituals — burn in the days following a death to provide for the newly departed as they transition

How to Work With Ancestor Money

• Set up a small fire-safe vessel at your ancestor altar
• Call on your ancestors by name or speak an intention aloud
• Burn the notes as an offering, releasing them with gratitude
• Pair with candles, libations, or food offerings to deepen the work
• Write a name or petition on the money before burning to personalize the offering

The Alchemy in Your Cup

• The Protective Shield (Clove, Nutmeg, Black and White Pepper): These robust, fiery, and protective spices work instantly to clear out stagnant or crossed conditions in your personal aura. They act as a warming barrier, driving off external stress, daily exhaustion, and spiritual sluggishness.
• The Attraction Magnet (Cinnamon, Star Anise, Orange, and Apple): This timeless, solar combination works rapidly to heat up your personal environment, sharpen your psychic opening, and sweeten your path. It raises your vital energy, pulling success, good fortune, and sharp focus directly to you.

How the Kitchen Magic Works:

Traditional Ways to Fix Your Brew:

• Activate the Back Spell: Turn your Witches Brew Chai pouch over. Place your hand over the hand-printed Witches Power Sigil, clear your mind, and read the handwritten spell aloud to activate the herbs.
• The Morning Petition: As you stir your tea clockwise, speak your desires into the steam. Visualize the honey or sugar you add sweetening your disposition and drawing favor to your day.
• The Cleansing Ritual: Drink a warm cup before beginning a meditation session, writing out a petition paper, or performing a candle spell to align your mind and boost your personal command.

Brewing Instructions & Serving Recommendations:

• To fully release both the rich flavours and the spiritual potency fixed within the herbs, shake the pouch gently before scooping to distribute the spices evenly.
• Steep 1 to 2 teaspoons of loose tea in 8 ounces of boiling water (212°F) for 5 to 7 minutes depending on how robust you like your chai.
• For a traditional kitchen-witch finish, this blend is spectacular when simmered on the stove with a splash of milk (or oat milk) and sweetened with raw honey or brown sugar. As you stir your sweetener clockwise, focus on drawing your desires, luck, and financial blessings directly into your cup.

Add strength, protection, and bold energy to your spiritual practice with our Dragon’s Blood Incense Powder, carefully packaged in-house. Dragon’s Blood is a deep red natural resin traditionally valued for its powerful colour, rich earthy scent, and strong magical associations.

Dragon’s Blood Resin is a name used for red resins that come from several plant sources, including Daemonorops draco, Dracaena draco, Dracaena cinnabari, and Croton lechleri. In incense and ritual supply traditions, Dragon’s Blood is commonly used as a resin incense for protection, power, purification, love, courage, banishing, uncrossing, and strengthening spiritual work.

Powder incense is usually made by blending finely ground aromatic ingredients such as herbs, woods, resins, spices, roots, flowers, and sometimes fragrance oils. Unlike stick incense, it does not contain a bamboo stick or need to be shaped. Instead, it is burned loose in small amounts on charcoal, allowing the smoke to rise and create a focused atmosphere for prayer, ritual, and intention work.

Dragon’s Blood Incense Powder is especially useful when you want to add force and direction to a working. Burn it during candle magic, protection spells, house cleansing, altar work, love rituals, or uncrossing work when you want to strengthen your intention and bring a bold, commanding energy to your practice.
