Apache Tears are a type of black obsidian, a natural volcanic glass. Their name comes from a well-known legend connected to Apache history, grief, and remembrance.

The story says that a group of Apache warriors were being pursued by the U.S. Cavalry. Rather than be captured, the warriors rode or leapt from a cliff to their deaths. When the Apache women and families heard what had happened, they wept for the lost warriors. Their tears are said to have fallen to the earth and turned into the small black obsidian stones now called Apache Tears.

Because of this story, Apache Tears are often associated with grief, mourning, emotional healing, protection, courage, and gentle release. In crystal work, they are usually considered a softer, more comforting form of black obsidian — still protective and grounding, but less harsh or intense than regular obsidian.
