How to Work With the Magic of the Moon

Every layer of magic adds to the spells power. Each correspondence is an added layer, your choice of candle colour, stone, herb all pile on top of each other and add power to your spell. The same is true for timing.Each day of the week has an energy, just like each season has its own energy. Spring is birth and new beginnings which turns into summer where you put in all the work. The time to harvest the fruits of your labour comes in fall and winter closes out the cycle with death, and introspection.

The lunar cycle follows this same cycle but on a monthly basis. When you add the appropriate timing with your spell work it adds an additional layer of power. The moons energy is working with you.

So what do we mean by appropriate timing? There are four lunar phases and each phase is perfect for specific practices.

New Moon

The first phase is the new moon. Consider this your blank slate. This is when you want to make your monthly intention. This is the beginning, where new ideas blossom. Activities and spells that are appropriate for this phase are making wish lists, meditations, manifestation work, and new beginnings.

Waxing Moon

The second phase is the waxing phase. This is when you have to stand strong in your resolve. You may face obstacles, do not waiver. This is a time of pushing forward and focusing in on your intention. Activities and spells that are appropriate for this phase are attraction work, divination, creativity work, money and success.

Full Moon

The third phase is the full moon. This is BIG energy, when the sun is shining completely on the moon. You’re working with both the moon and the suns power. This is the time to charge yourself and your surroundings and banish that which is not serving. Activities and spells that are appropriate for this phase are charging your tools, and stones, making moon water, healing, banishing, spiritual cleansing, and clarity exercises.

Waning Moon

The final moon phase is the waning phase. This is the phase where you observe, reconsider, look for new angles and relinquish that which isn’t working. You’ve done the magic, now is the time to surrender, relinquish your expectations, do some introspection and surrender. Activities and spells that are appropriate for this phase are gratitude practices, releasing magic, breaking bad habits, introspection meditations, and rest.

Every phase of the moon is important. Living by the lunar phases is a recipe for living a balanced life. We can’t hustle without rest, just like we can’t identify happiness if we don’t know what sorrow feels like. In my experience, working with the moon is a gentle way to explore divine feminine energy and every practitioner can benefit from this practice.
