St. John’s wort is a plant with yellow flowers that has been used in traditional European medicine as far back as the ancient Greeks. The name St. John’s wort apparently refers to John the Baptist, as the plant blooms around the time of the feast of St. John the Baptist in late June. St. John’s Wort should also not be taken by patients using Indinavir, a drug often given to AIDS patients, Cyclosporine, an immunosuppressive drug given to transplant patients, and Warfarin, an anticoagulant.
Side affects of St. John’s Wort may include dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue, gastrointestinal discomfort, skin rash and photo-sensitivity. When using St. John’s Wort, take extra care with sun protection.
