Lapis lazuli is a sodium aluminium silicate with sulphur, chlorine hydroxyl, and variable inclusions of pyrite and white calcite. The name means "blue rock" and is always a brilliant blue with violet or greenish tints.Â

Small crystals of pyrite are always present in lapis lazuli and distinguishes lapis lazuli from its blue cousin - sodalite, which lacks pyrite.Â
